Sometimes it's good to focus annoyance and make something out of it. Mr DogHorse and I have collaborated on a couple of musical Flash animations to try and express our annoyance with the ID card legislation. They feature puppies and politicians. They are quite silly.
Make your own mock ID card with the ID Unknown Card-o-matic! Simply add name, date of birth, nationality, ID number and a name for the signature, select a picture from the web and you're done. It serves no purpose, but arguably neither will the real thing.

I know the proposed ID cards use biometrics, but biometrics rely on technology and we all know it won't be perfect, so sometimes it will be down to people. Fortunately security isn't about matching people to their ID cards, it's about intelligence. Now doesn't that make you feel better.
